 PREPARATION

To prepare for worship and the message preached on each Sunday in this series I encourage you to follow the guide below. Follow the prompts for each Sunday in the days leading up to each service.

  • Read Eph. 6:10-18, and reflect on the role prayer plays in spiritual warfare, what prayer is, and why God has given us this particular means of grace.

  • Read Matt. 6:9-13. Pray the Lord’s Prayer daily this week. As you do, consider how it can order and shape your prayer life.

  • Read 1 Sam. 2:2–10. Set aside dedicated time in prayer throughout the week to praise God for who he is, what he has done, and what he is doing. Let these times of prayer be nothing but an expression of praise.

  • Read Luke 18:9–14. Work throughout the week to go deeper into confession, acknowledging your sins and temptation, turning from them and pleading with God for grace to walk in continual repentance. Also consider meditating on Psalm 32 or 51.

  • Read 1 Kings 3:5-14. Write out the specific and pressing needs that burden you this week. Bring them before the Lord daily, and keep a record of how he answers these prayers.

  • Read Ex. 33:12-23. Choose a few people to pray for every day this week. Be specific, asking God to meet their particular needs and strengthen their faith.

  • Read Ps. 63:5-8 progressively throughout the week. Meditate on one portion each day. Consider what it says about spiritual thirst, God’s presence and nearness, the habit of Biblical meditation, and the value of hope.

    Monday – Psalm 63:1

    Tuesday – Psalm 63:2–3

    Wednesday – Psalm 63:4–5

    Thursday – Psalm 63:6–8

    Friday – Psalm 63:9–11

  • Read Psalm 42, considering your own suffering, loss, and sorrow. Bring these to God with a heart wanting to trust him.

  • This week read Luke 22:39–46, and ask yourself, “What part of my life am I withholding from God, and what would it look like to consecrate myself to the Lord in that area?”

  • Read Luke 22:45–46. Think through and write down the things that distract or discourage you from praying. Pray that God would give you wisdom in overcoming these distractions, and seek advice from trusted friends.

  • Read and meditate on Phil. 4:6–7. Consider how God works in you through prayer, regardless of the way in which he answers your petitions, and express gratitude for how God has answered your requests.

  • Read John 17, noting the ways in which Jesus prayed for you. Meditate on what his prayer means for your heart and life during this season.

RESOURCES

Prayer and Posture

Scripture describes the prophets, apostles, and even Jesus as kneeling, standing, lifting hands, and bowing low, in prayer. While posture isn’t the emphasis in Scripture’s teaching on prayer, it is the example of God’s people and his Son. Prayer and Posture is an encouragement to consider the value of posture in prayer, and to use it as a means of expressing and exciting the affections of our heart.

Prayer Before Medicine

Lewis Bayly’s prayer directs the sick to find hope in God and trust him for healing when taking necessary medication for their illness.

Pastor Joe’s SERMON NOTES

At the request of some of our members I provide a copy of my handwritten sermon notes to the congregation. While they aren’t created as a listening aid and may be a bit hard to read, you may be one of those people who find them helpful while listening to or reviewing the messages.

This document will be updated weekly throughout the series.

You can check out the other sermon series from Redeemer Fellowship
at the church website.
